STAY COOL: Banning Community Center Will be Open Saturday and Sunday

Due to an excessive heat warning and triple-digit heat expected this weekend, Banning Community Center will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday June 29 and Sunday June 30, a spokeswoman for the Banning Community Service Department said Thursday morning.

Other cool centers in the Pass area are open today and Friday, according to the county Department of Public Health.

Highs in Banning and Beaumont are expected to peak close to 100 today, around 101 Friday, 106 Saturday and 103 on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The Weather Service Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the Pass and the rest of Southern California for a period beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday June 29 through 8 p.m. Sunday June 30.

"A strong upper level ridge of high pressure over California and Nevada will bring very hot weather to inland areas Friday through Sunday," the Weather Service advised. "High temperatures will be 115 to 120 in the lower deserts . . . around 110 in the upper deserts . . . 100 to 110 in the Inland Empire and 100 to 105 on the lowest mountain slopes. Near record temperatures will be likely in these areas. The heat will be dangerous to those who are outdoors."

The excessive heat warning for Saturday and Sunday prompted city officials to ensure Banning Community Center will be open both days, Ana Candelario of the Community Service Department said in a phone interview.

Banning Community Center is at 789 N. San Gorgonio.
