SILVER FIRE HELP: Victim Resources for Debris Clean-Up, Assistance Contacts

Find out how to get free help for things like hazardous waste disposal, property assessments and debris hauling.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department distributed information Saturday to help those who had property damaged when the Silver Fire passed through the region.

To date, more than two dozen homes are known to have burned to the ground in the now-19,000 acre blaze, with 26 residences considered lost, along with a commercial property, Cal Fire reported.  Two other buildings are listed by Cal Fire as "damaged."  As of Friday night, though, no more structures were considered threatened.

The county waste department says they will be working closely with state and other county agencies to "expedite a safe and effective cleanup operation."

The following is an excerpt from a letter to affected residents: 

Whether you are a home owner or a renter in the affected area of the Silver Fire, we are encouraging you to contact the Department on Monday August 12, 20013 or shortly thereafter between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM. By contacting the Department as soon as possible, we will be able to record your location and coordinate waste assessment, transportation and disposal services when you are ready.

The following assistance may be available for you at no cost: 

  • Property assessments including asbestos and lead surveys to help protect you, you family and other workers from harmful exposure.
  • Free Household Hazardous Waste disposal for harmful chemicals and their containers which were damaged by the fire.
  • Certified appliance recycling including refrigerant recovery for damaged appliances. 
  • Waste bin placement and hauling for debris clean up. 
  • Waiver of disposal charges at local landfill.

The fire department's emergency services branch has put together a contact sheet for things like reporting damaged property  power outages, the need for potable water, hazmat and pet sheltering.
