UPDATE: Hathaway Fire NE of Banning Now 3,823 Acres, 83 Percent Contained

The Hathaway Fire smoldering in mountains northeast of Banning was 83 percent contained as of 6 p.m. Wednesday June 19, according to incident commanders in Beaumont.

The size of the fire's burned area was estimated at 3,823 acres and there were 420 personnel assigned to the fire Wednesday evening.

Ten firefighters have been injured fighting the fire in the rugged San Gorgonio Wilderness since the blaze broke out Sunday June 9 on the Morongo Indian Reservation, according to incident commanders.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

"A Burn Area Emergency Response team is now on scene," a Forest Service representative said. "BAER teams are staffed by specially trained professionals who evaluate the burned area and propose treatments to minimize the effects of the fire. . . . The goal is to return the area to as a natural condition as possible."

At 6 a.m. Thursday June 20 management of Hathaway Fire operations will transition from Southern California Incident Management Team 2 to San Bernardino National Forest personnel, according to incident commanders.

The target date for full containment of the Hathaway Fire has been set for June 25, but incident commander Don Garwood released a letter addressed to the public on Thursday stating "There is no way of knowing exactly when we will finish our work."
