Wow! Talk about Brown-Obama-Democrat Cronyism. Not only can the system be built and installed forRead More less than $500/node, it already has. I helped with one of the nodes with-in the past four years. The system (requiring less than 25 sq.ft. (donated) can be set up similar to a Home WiFi Security Cam with FTP access. Really it can be automatically monitored and maintained for free through a cooperating University. This is merely a $16 million a year hornswoggle going into the crony's pocket. Its dirtier than greedy profit. All that, lying cheating and stealing on top of it. Republicans in office don't deserve to be there because they do not study and know about the communities they represent or what they have already (and recently) funded. They are not doing their jobs in a two party system. Having formerly worked for the DNC the only thing good I can say about democrats is they at least learn their constituencies well enough to manipulate them.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, Gail. The suggestion for a 1 cent sales tax was simply that - aRead More suggestion to point out to people that they are expecting their Council to do the impossible and come up with something they themselves cannot come up with. Hopefully we won't lose the Hotel parcel out of the El Paseo Project as well and that TOT you fought for will help. But that is a target for the developer and he already has tried to circumvent the Council on this and tried to slide by the plain wording in the contract which he at the time acknowledged which required him to bring this before them. The residents will have to fight a little harder than they did over the AB109 Parole/Probation department, and now it has become evident that the developer has an agenda different than that originally agreed upon this will bear close watching. **** I like your idea of attracting more people off the freeway and increasing the take that way instead of raising the sales tax - but just exactly how would we do that in order to quickly raise the revenue to support hiring more officers? People have been trying to figure that one out for a while now. In the meantime, we are still without the officers we need. It's an issue of whether the residents are willing to bite the bullet and pay for the officers out of our own pockets through a higher sales tax or whether we want to finance more officers on the backs of people pulled off the freeway to businesses and attractions which at this time either don't exist or aren't a draw. **** I'm not one to elect a Council and then throw them under the bus by giving them a task which has so far been untenable. I think the residents need to participate by coming to meetings or getting to know their CouncilPeople and suggesting ideas. I have taken the time to have lunch or breakfast with or talk to every member and gotten to know each and the positions they hold. I will say that there are two positions there that each represents a portion of the residents. To me that is a good thing. I also have to say the one thing I found is that each of these people are regular people like the rest of us and each has a better Banning for all as their commitment. I'm getting pretty tired of factions playing off the differences to create issues, particularly the media you speak of. In comparison to other cities we have a great council who is very accessible by the public and who has requested the public's involvement instead of trying to "rule", as in Beaumont. **** Thanks, Gail, for taking the time to lay out your position! I hope others will as well - maybe someone will come up with something that works and break the impasse. **** Jeremiah
Gail Paparian June 28, 2014 at 09:10 am
Jeremiah- Forgetting the idea of a hotel in the Paseo San Gorgonio is probably a good thing. ForRead More one , it is between freeways exits, so it is already at a disadvantage. "Easy on/Easy off" is a fundamental criteria. I have seen little, make that no evidence that members of the Banning council desire to work together. It's election season, so even the people who aren't running are opining from the dais, as evidenced by last weeks desire to "have it on the record" that each council member wanted more police in the city. It wouldn't take me that long to go through my extensive video/audio library to find a "clip" where one member or the other is espousing an opposing point of view. It is never too soon to publish something positive about current or future comings in Banning. They are so few and far between, they should be lauded.
Jeremiah June 28, 2014 at 12:56 pm
I personally agree with you that the hotel idea might not be the best use of the area if we can evenRead More find one who would consider it. They are not going to want to build next to an AB109 Parole/Probation department and DA's office. There is the access issue you mention. Then there is something else everyone seems to have missed - there is not enough space in that 1/4 of the complex for an upscale hotel and parking. But a large percentage of the residents were vocal about keeping it and the Council wisely put off the issue rather than fight the developer over it at this time. **** I do see a lot of desire to work together in amongst the political posturing. I have taken the time to speak to and get to know each of the Council member on a personal basis and I am convinced that each of them is sincere in their views for a better Banning. The fact that they have different views of what is good for the City is not a bad thing - it is a good thing. When agreements are worked out it means the views of all residents have been represented. What we don't want is a Council united which fails to represent one view of a portion of the residents. I am sick and tired of people who don't understand that who stoop to calling names and character assassination and innuendo and trying to construct conspiracy theories to gain credibility for their views. These Council members are people like you and I who live in the community, which we elected to represent us, and it is just wrong to sit behind a keyboard and try to tear one view or another down. It is our job as residents to support them and make suggestions and attend meetings and call them to task if they fail in representing us - not because one side or another doesn't get their way and wants to punish the faction on the Council which disagreed with them. If a majority of the residents don't like the decisions a Council member makes, there is a proper way to remove them through voting. I find it ironic and instructive that those complaining the loudest and producing the most vitriol never offer a positive suggestion and wouldn't think of running themselves and making a change. **** Jeremiah
