UPDATE: Flash Flood Warning for Silver Fire Burn Area, Cabazon, South Banning

Update 5:05 p.m. A flash flood warning remained in effect until 5:15 p.m. for the Mountain Fire burn and until 6:30 p.m. for the Silver Fire burn, according to the National Weather Service.

At 4:50 p.m. radar indicated heavy rain had diminished over the Mountain Fire burn, and meteorologists estimated radar showed 1 to more than 2 inches of rain fell on the Mountain Fire burn area before 3:30 p.m.


"Runoff and debris flows are still likely in and below the burn area including Palm Canyon Wash where a USGS gage continued to report elevated flow at 4:45 p.m. PDT."

A flash flood warning was issued Tuesday afternoon for the Silver Fire burn area, including Cabazon, portions of Highway 243 and south Banning.

The warning was in effect until 6:30 p.m. Sept. 3, according to the National Weather Service.

"At 4:18 p.m. . . . radar indicated very heavy rain moving north into the Silver Fire burn area near Cabazon," the Weather Service advised.

"Locations in the warning area include but are not limited to Cabazon and Snow Creek. . . . Watersheds burned in 2013 within the Silver burn area are particularly susceptible to flash floods and debris flows from this rainstorm.

"Dwellings . . . roads . . . trails . . . and campgrounds located along drainages within or below the burned basins can be impacted . . . this includes infrastructure in low lying areas near One Horse Canyon and Jenson Creek.

"Dwellings downstream of the burn area . . . including those in the Morongo Indian Reservation . . . Snow Creek . . . Hurley Flat . . . Twin Pines Ranch . . . McMullen Flat . . . Mount Oak Boys Ranch . . . Poppet Flats . . . and portions of Banning south of I-10 and adjacent to the burn area."

Roads that could be impacted include Banning-Idyllwild Road, Highway 243, Esperanza Avenue, roads on Morongo Indian Reservation south of Margaret and Esther avenues, roads near Poppet Flats Road, Old Idyllwild Road, Ellis Drive, Twin Pines Road, Gorgonio View Road, Wonderview Road, Vista Grade Road, Halls Grade Road, Silver Creek Drive and Wolfskill Truck Trail.
