Former Felon Been Kids' Boxing Mentor 20+ Years, But Youth Football Says 'No'

Albert Gonzales served time in prison from 1970 to 1975. He's been running a youth boxing club in Hemet-San Jacinto area since 1990 but says he can't get the ok to coach football.

Former gang-banger Albert Gonzales served time in prison from 1970 to 1975 when he was a young man.

He's been running a youth boxing club in the Hemet-San Jacinto area since 1990.

He now wants to help coach his grandson's football team. League officials say 'No.'

Gonzales, who has undergone police scrutiny to work as a boxing mentor with local children, is frustrated.

Shouldn't he be able to get his record expunged? Wasn't prison about reform? I would say 36yrs out of trouble is a sign of something....
steve l September 22, 2012 at 06:20 pm
He can sit right there. In the stands and watch. This is a reprocusion. Nobody forced him to be a felon. This is the price he must pay
xcak September 22, 2012 at 07:11 pm
@steve 1, you're a dumd Ass!!!!
For The Kids September 22, 2012 at 09:34 pm
I'm guessing this is just a policy issue. If the League policy is that felons will not be allowed to coach, then that's the reason he's disqualified. Can't really have a policy that says "SOME felons will not be allowed to coach". Opens up major liability issues for the League. Gramps is doing great work with the boxing and will hopefully continue to guide those kids through adolescence. There are so many kids who need just that kind of guidance.

how long must this man continue to pay for a debt he has already paid for?

He can get a certificate of rehabilitation. It will automatically be sent to Gov Jerry Brown for a pardon. Once you have that you can work anywhere. If you are at a lower income, there is help for you. It can also be done on your own. It takes some research and filing papers at the courthouse. He can get it started by getting a live scan for himself, so he knows what's on his record, then start researching "certificate of rehabilitation " how to file for . It's really not that hard, I actually did it for myself. Now I have a full pardon. You have to file in the county you live in, not the county the crimes happened in. I had to do it all by myself, I didn't qualify for assistance. Either way, if you have been a good upstanding citizen since the crimes amd its been over 10 years you shouldn't have a problem. Plus, it feels good knowing you can work anywhere once you have the certificate of rehabilitation. Good luck!

Lol, at least it was a difficult word
rosie September 23, 2012 at 06:16 pm
Good going. It is very important to have good vocabulary skills but you also need to have good spelling skills. That way when you have something important to say, people will take you seriously.

Washy September 23, 2012 at 07:23 pm
@rosie someone has to have poor spelling and or grammar (like your lack of a capital letter on the front of your name) so self righteous people can correct it or what else would you have to do? You certainly didn't add anything to the conversation
Heaven~Bound September 24, 2012 at 01:43 pm
I have been involved with youth football for nearly 20 years and the only policy I have ever heard of disqualifying anyone from coaching is any sex or drug related offenses.
rosie September 24, 2012 at 07:01 pm
@steve I I am sending you this note to clarify what my objective was when I helped you with your spelling on this blog. It would seem that an individual has taken umbrage to my missive to you. His/her feelings are of no concern of mine and I have no intention of responding to his farcical abject note because I have to remind myself that he no doubt suffers from low self esteem and it probably makes him feel superior to demean others. Besides, I would not want to lower myself to his level. I will pray for him instead. <(((><
However, I do want you to know that it was not my intention to belittle or offend you in any manner. Quite the contrary. In reading your response to xcak, I could not help but to enjoy your verbal retaliation because I believe that xcak deserved comeuppance for his rude behavior to you. It was a hostile and vulgar thing that he said to you and your were entitled to reciprocate to his impudence. But instead of being disparaging in your reaction, your response showed civility which made me feel good about you. rosie with a lower case r showing deference to my father God, his son Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost whose names shall always be capitalized. <(((><

Just because blogs are an open forum that encourages others to communicate their feelings, does not entitle anyone to be mean spirited or ignoble to someone else's introspection. Don't these people understand that they only end up showing how pitiful and obtuse they are by what they write? It becomes very clear very fast by reading this blog who has class and who does not, and you steve have class. Thank you for understanding.

dolores spann September 25, 2012 at 08:04 pm
If he's been working with kids since the 90's maybe there a change in the rules.

why can't his record be ex sponged?
Only my thought September 30, 2012 at 02:40 am
I'm sure if it has to do with kids He should stay in the stand, if it was just I was a kid being a kid give him another shot
Washy September 30, 2012 at 08:41 am
soooo Olivia you say a person cannot be rehabilitated and should never get a second chance even after 25+years of a clean record and upstanding citizen living?
Barbara Jimenez December 6, 2012 at 06:39 pm
I agree with Steve, in addittion his demeanor and persona are very intimidating! He never smiles and does not seem be kid friendly what so ever. I would never be able nor allow my child to take a advice from a man like that. I personally removed my son from an organization he was at, due to the way he conducts himself around children. As a mentor one should have knowledge to oversee children of all shapes and sizes including Special Needs. I noticed he would easily get aggrivated with the slower learners and took preference towards other kids. He did not strike me as the type to open up a converstion with, instead always looked the other way. I have encountered people in the community who are ex felons, but are REALLY out there to make a difference, unfortunately not from this guy.
dale ross grinager December 7, 2012 at 11:29 pm
Dale Barbara, if you took the time to get to know this man, you would find he is one of kindest and most dedicated men i have ever met. In boxing and football there is not a lot of smiling. He is simply trying to get the best effort from each kid and commending the kids who are doing well. I have known Albert for many years and if i could describe in a few words, they would be he is firm but he is fair. If its smiling your looking for, maybe you should enroll your son in a ballet class. i understand they smile a lot there.

UPDATE on CV (nickname)...a tumor protruding from his right eye was removed yesterday - he now canRead More close the eye completely which, coupled with a fly mask, will keep the flies from laying eggs in his eye (a very nasty thing indeed). He has settled in with a gentle geriatric horse for a companion and is eating well (his weight was not an issue before - he obviously was fed decently). His club hoof causes him quite a lot of discomfort, but he manages to hobble around. A visit from the farrier is nextin line, to see if his discomfort can be aleviated. I don't believe he will ever be a riding horse, but he casts a nice shadow and is gentle and kind to be around. There is a peacefulness that eminates from his very being...

Niki- yes the plans have been updated to allow Banning and Yucaipa to share in the use of the newRead More ponds. It is an inter-agency plan that is beneficial to everyone. Why you consider having other entities share this project, which bonds us all together: they are paying to help build the new area so we, as ratepayers aren't hit with the whole bill, and we are going to finally get some recycled water into use from Yucaipa, Banning gets new wells, and no matter what- we have ultimate control over the use at all times- how that is a horror story I can't figure out. These plans were in the works for years, it was no secret. Its now being finalized by the board- as the details are now ironed out. The only horror story I see happening is how Beaumont refuses to make an agreement with the district to utilize their recycled water- and its not all the water district's fault like you think. Beaumont can't build unless they find some new sources of water. One of the reasons they pulled out is once they update their wastewater facility- they don't plan on wasting that recycled water just on landscaping . They are going to dump it into the basin itself for the water credit. Beaumont residents have no clue that their drinking water will eventually be more wastewater than water coming down the mountain. Sorry- but I think Fraser is doing a great job. If he hadn't got in there, the district would belong to Beaumont, who would take all the water they want regardless of impact studies, and siphon off all the money for their own uses. Guess you missed their lawsuit in the courts- the courts laughed them out. Beaumont is broke. The water district is financially sound.

Ben, it is unfortunate you are the victim of such serious misinformation. I thought I knew everyoneRead More at last night's BCVWD meeting. Who were you?
Claire Frémont June 15, 2013 at 09:59 am
I'm curious, Niki, what misinformation are you speaking of concerning Ben's comment? He appears toRead More be stating information that I've read about also. Beaumont did sue to try and take over the water district, they did get a cease and desist order to stop dumping their wastewater into the aquifer, and have pulled out of all negotiations with the district to supply them with recycled water. The district has made the arrangements instead with Yucaipa to take their water, with the hopes that someday Beaumont will come around. All these things are in agendas and downloads available to the public, which part are you disputing?
