Arts, Music, Science Oh My!

What has been cut from our schools over and over again across the country? The arts jump to mind, but they are not the only discipline getting the shaft. Science and technology have been placed on the back bunson burner as well. Schools focus on English or Language arts and Math. These two subjects are the major focus of standardized testing. Test scores are how a school is judged. If you don't have a high API  index, you fail as a school, which in my experience is not necessarily true. I know schools still teach history, and science but it is not given equal time and many teachers have admitted to me that history or social studies is usually taught through many language arts lessons. For a year and a half my son was homeschooled. We used california virtual academies.(CAVA) It was a tough and time consuming curriculum. His third grade curriculum covered everything in equal time, he even got to pick electives like a foreign language or music. In third grade at cava he covered everything and in more depth than what he just learned in fourth grade at his public school last year. I wish more public schools could provide a more well rounded education to our students. Budget cuts are usually to blame. I am mostly talking about elementary school here, but the arts and sciences are often cut in the middle school and high school level as well.
This blog is not intended to bash the school system or teachers. I have been impressed with both when we moved to beaumont, even at the school with lowest API scores. This blog came about because I want to open a business here in beaumont. The name is not created yet but the idea is.
It would operate like those jumper businesses that have popped up throughout the I.e. You pay a fee to enter for a 4 hour time period. Hours would be somethung like 10-2, and then 3-7. Plus we could do birthday parties and school assemblies. During that time you have free reign in a building that features an art studio, a music lab/studio, a science lab, tech space, a small stage for dress up and theater. Each area will have a expert/teacher that can help the kids if and when they need it. It is a space to create and learn. In addition we would feature art shows , kids theater, science competitions, lego mind storms competitions, music concerts etc. It would provide a very needed service to our kids, one of creativity and knowledge through hands on activities.
I am planning on starting some crowd funding soon. More info on that to come.
