OLYMPICS: Yucaipa Grandparents Proud of Gold Medal Winner Tyler Clary

The swimmer set an Olympic record in the 200-meter backstroke.

Swimmer Tyler Clary, who was born in Redlands and graduated from Riverside Polytechnic High School, won gold Thursday in London, setting a new Olympic record in the 200-meter backstroke.

Clary outdueled Japan's Ryosuke Irie and U.S. teammate Ryan Lochte in an Olympic record 1 minute 53.41 seconds.

Clary, formerly Scott Flowers, changed his name when he turned 18 to honor his stepfather.

"He always told me, even when he was very young, that some day he was going to the Olympics," Clary's grandmother, Deb Flowers of Yucaipa, told NBC4. "Well, you know, I'd say, yeah that's nice."

"She told me to give her an ear jerk for her," Clary told NBC before he won gold Thursday. "I'm really excited, and so thankful for how supportful my family is, and on top of that, not just my family, but the people that have been behind me the whole way."
