NIGHT RESCUE: Oceanside Woman Located Early Monday in San Jacinto Mountains

A 60-year-old woman who was reportedly injured was located early Monday in the San Jacinto Mountains above the San Gorgonio Pass, a sheriff's sergeant said in a statement.

Deputies went to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway just after 11 p.m. Sunday June 30 in response to a report of a hiker in need of rescue, Sgt. Mike Portillo of the Cabazon Station said.

The hiker, Teresa Suarez of Oceanside, California, "was reported to have fallen and was unable to make it down the mountain without assistance," Portillo said.

Volunteers with the Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit were flown by sheriff's helicopter to reach the woman about 3 a.m. Monday, Portillo said. It was not clear from Portillo's report where Suarez was in relation to San Jacinto Peak and the Tram's Mountain Station.

Suarez' injuries were evaluated and determined to be non-life threatening, Portillo said.

"Due to the terrain of the mountain and limited visibility, rescue personnel bedded down until the morning hours when rescue personnel were able to safely transport Suarez back to the Palm Springs Tram," Portillo said.

Rescuers used a Stokes litter to carry the woman an unspecified distance, according to Portillo.

Rescuers took Suarez down the Tram and she was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment.

The Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit is a group of trained volunteers who respond to wilderness emergencies. Members of the Riverside County Sheriff's Emergency Response Team, State Parks Services, and Desert Search and Rescue assisted.
