HEAT IN THE PASS: Chatigny Community Center to be Open Saturday and Sunday

Due to the excessive heat warning for this weekend, Albert A. Chatigny Sr. Community Recreation Center will be open as a designated cooling center from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday June 29 and Sunday June 30, according to Beaumont city spokeswoman.

Forecast highs for Beaumont include 102 for today, Friday June 28, and 108 on both Saturday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The two-day excessive heat warning has been issued for the Pass, the Inland Empire and desert ares of Riverside and San Bernardino counties from 10 a.m. June 29 to 8 p.m. June 30.

"A strong ridge of high pressure will bring very hot days inland through Sunday . . . easily the hottest of the year so far," the Weather Service advised in an update issued Friday morning.

"In the deserts . . . the excessive heat may continue into Monday so the heat warning may need to be extended one more day. Gradual cooling in the valleys and mountains Monday and Tuesday."

Chatigny Community Center, at 1310 Oak Valley Parkway, is normally open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, Beaumont spokeswoman Darci Mulvihill said in a statement.

The cooling center will be open Saturday and Sunday "to anyone looking for temporary relief from the heat, including seniors, the disabled, and those who are unable to afford to run their air conditioner," Mulvihill said.

Visitors will be able to watch TV and play games, Mulvihill said. There will also be snacks and drinks.

City officials offered these hot weather tips:
