VIDEO: Beaumont Brings the Wheel to Banning Where Broncos Are Fired Up

Banning-Beaumont Patch video by Guy McCarthy

The War of the Wheel comes east this year to Banning, where Beaumont will try to defend their title Friday night as Kings of the Mountain.

It's said to be the oldest football rivalry in Riverside County and it's one of the oldest in California, going back generations to when football was played without face masks.

Last year the battle for supremacy in the Pass produced 90 points in Beaumont, the highest-scoring War of the Wheel in recent years. Beaumont dominated to beat Banning 56-34 under the lights on brand-new Cougars Field.

The Cougars have dominated their next-door neighbor since 2006, winning five of the past seven against the Broncos.

This year Banning exudes confidence.

"Those Cougars better be ready," said Broncos Associated Student Body president Savanna Alcantar, who organized a tailgate rally Thursday night at her school. "Us Broncos are going to show them what's up."

Banning hosts Beaumont at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 at 100 W. Westward Ave.
