State Wrestling Champion Amanda Hendey of Beaumont Takes Aim at National Title

Beaumont High grappler confident in her chances.

Beaumont High School’s Amanda Hendey is approaching this weekend’s Girls Folk style National Wrestling Championships much like she has any other competition.

Hendey is in it to win it.

“I’m not really sure who I will be facing or who will be there,” Hendey said. “But I expect to win it no matter who I face.”

The National tournament is not sanctioned by CIF, California’s governing body of high school sports. Hendey will instead represent the San Diego Hot Beaches Wrestling Club at the tournament.

And it could be her crowning achievement if all goes as planned.

That says a lot, especially after taking a look at her list of accomplishments already.

Hendey is Beaumont High School’s first State Champion. And she doubled up on that, winning the California CIF State title as a junior and senior.

Hendey is a 3-time State Finalist, a 3-time CIF champion and a 4-time CIF placer (she finished second in 2009 and then won CIF in 2010 and 2011).

Hendey is a 3-time boys CIF qualifier and 3-time All American.

She is aiming at her second National Championship final this weekend.

“If I don’t win, I will be really mad,” Hendey said. “It’s a big deal to me.”

Hendey placed fourth at the Nationals two years ago and took runner-up honors last year. This weekend she will be competing at 130 lbs.

“I think the only thing I don’t have is a national title,” Hendey said. “It’s the one I want to get.”

Hendey helped the Cougars win a share of the Mountain Pass League team title, qualified for the CIF boys’ individuals tournament and won the CIF Regional title in front of her hometown fans at Beaumont High School .

Her most recent outing was the CIF State meet, a crowning accomplishment for most high school wrestlers.

Hendey will compete in front of her ‘new’ hometown fans at the nationals. The tournament will be hosted by Oklahoma City University where Hendey will attend and compete at in the fall on a wrestling scholarship.

“It will be kind of cool,” Hendey said. “All my coaches and teammates will be there.”
