The match-winning goal by Redlands native Landon Donovan that secured the L.A. Galaxy's triumph as Major League Soccer champions was named the top Los Angeles sports moment of 2011 on Thursday night.
Donovan scored the decisive goal in the 72nd minute of the Galaxy's 1-0 victory over Houston in MLS Cup, the league's championship match, on Nov. 20, 2011, in Carson.
Donovan and the Galaxy were recognized Thursday night at the seventh annual LA Sports Awards at Club Nokia in the L.A. Live complex across from Staples Center, LA Observed reported.
The LA Sports Awards are presented annually by the Los Angeles Sports Council to celebrate the greatest moments of the year in sports in the Los Angeles-Orange County area.
More than 800 people attended the awards gala, which will be televised by Fox Sports West at 10:30 p.m. Friday, the Sports Council stated.
