Beaumont Wins in L.A. to Advance

The Cougars stretched their winning streak to nine and have won 16 of their last 17 games. They host Lompoc Cabrillo on Thursday.

The Beaumont High softball team built an early lead and was able to
maintain it Tuesday afternoon in the second round of the CIF Southern
Section Division 5 playoffs in West Los Angeles.

The second-seeded Cougars (23-4) led host Marymount 2-1 after the
first inning and 4-2 after the third inning, then tacked on three more
runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to build a commanding
lead.

Trailing 8-2 and down to their final at-bat, the Sailors (15-10)
rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn't
enough to catch the Mountain Pass League champions.

The Cougars stretched their winning streak to nine and have won 16 of
their last 17 games.

Marymount lost to La Salle in the Division 6 championship game last
spring and beat La Salle for the Division 6 title in 2009.

Beaumont (22-4) opened the playoffs last Thursday with a 4-1 win over
Los Padres League at-large entry Santa Ynez. Marymount, co-champion of
the Sunshine League, blanked Ridgecrest Burroughs 4-0 in the first
round as senior captain Hayley Schultz pitched a seven-hitter with 10
strikeouts.

On Thursday, Beaumont will host Lompoc Cabrillo in the quarterfinals.
The winner advances to next Tuesday's semifinals against either
Mission Valley League champion Arroyo or Orange League champion and
No. 3-seeded Savannah.

As the third-place team out of the Los Padres League, Cabrillo was
given a wild-card berth into the playoffs and, after routing La Puente
9-1 to reach the main draw, it has pulled off 2-1 upsets over Almont
League champion Schurr and Orange Coast League winner Santa Ana
Calvary Chapel.

The Conquistadores (18-11) are riding a seven-game winning streak
behind the arm of senior pitcher and co-captain Kiley Shae Aldridge,
who has won all three playoff games.
