Beaumont High's Who To Watch in Spring Sports

With baseball, softball and others in full swing, Beaumont athletic director Martin DuSold picks players to watch this season.

With spring sports going strong, Beaumont High is establishing its place in both the Mountain Pass League and Riverside County.

Cougars Athletic Director Martin DuSold has done a rundown of the school’s spring sports and which athletes to keep an eye on this spring:

Baseball - The Cougars are off to a 3-3 start to the season, and dropped their MPL opener to #4-ranked Tahquitz by a score of 3-1. Junior 1B Moises Rodriguez leads the team with a .444 average, followed by senior C Jake Johnson with a .417 average. They are tied for the team lead in RBI with 5 each, and Johnson has the only home run thus far.

Softball - The Lady Cougars are off to a 5-3 start, having won 3 of 4 games at the recent Valley View tournament. Two of the losses came the first weekend of the season, when Temecula Valley (top-ranked in CIF Division 1) knocked off Beaumont in both games of a double-header by scores of 7-4 and 8-3. Leading hitters include: Alainah Ortiz batting .474 with 10 RBI; Arianna Espinoza batting .444; Jayme Tickemyer batting .435 with 9 RBI; Stephanie Tickemyer batting .379 with 6 RBI; and Kristen Neal batting .360 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. The Lady Cougars opened MPL play with Tahquitz and Citrus Hill this week.

Swimming - The boys' and girls' swim teams have had a tough schedule early on, swimming against upper division schools such as Citrus Valley, Palm Springs, Palm Desert and Yucaipa. The boys have defeated Citrus Valley and Yucaipa, along with Desert Hot Springs and Perris, while the girls have defeated Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert and Perris. At the 16-team Elsinore Invitational this past weekend, the boys placed 3rd overall, and the girls placed 5th.

Boys' Golf - The boys' golf team is off to a 5-1 start, including an MPL-opening victory over Hemet HS. They are led by returners Victor Rodriguez, Austin Crenshaw and Greg Kantzalis, as they look to repeat as MPL champions.

Boys' Tennis - The tennis team is off to a very strong start at 6-2, including a victory over then #5-ranked San Gorgonio HS. The Cougars are now ranked #10 in CIF Division 5. Seniors Ty Hopp and Andrew Khong lead the team in singles' play, while Adrian Chatigny and Bobby Mahan are the leading doubles' team.
