Beaumont High Loses Two Close Games

Cougars drop heartbreakers in baseball, softball.

Beaumont High's baseball and softball teams shared similar heartache on Wednesday.

"The kids showed a lot of heart," Cougars baseball coach Rick Halsey said. "We were down by three in the bottom of the seventh inning. We came back and tied it. I’ve got to give the kids credit for that."

Beaumont trailed 6-3 in the bottom half of the seventh arrived. Moises Rodriguez drove in the game tying runs with a hard hit single down the third base line, tying the game at 6 with just one out.

But the Cougars couldn't finish it off. Two batters struck out to end the inning.

"It's disappointing but we played hard," Halsey said. "We fought hard. It is what it is. On any given day anything can happen in baseball."

San Jacinto put the game away in their half of the ninth with a pair of runs to make it a 9-6 victory. Beaumont defeated San Jacinto, 11-6, earlier in the season.

"We play them again on Friday over there," Halsey said. "And we hope to bounce back and hope to get a win."

Beaumont did belt out 10 hits. Steven Tickemyer, Moises Rodriguez and Jake Johnson each had two hits.

It was the third straight loss for Beaumont (3-4, 9-9), which sits in the middle of the league standings but still has a clear view of the league's final playoff spot.

"We are not out of this at all," Halsey said.

Beaumont's softball team had been rolling along. But on Wednesday the Cougars were quiet with the bat. Beaumont was held to three hits.

"We just didn't hit as well as we should have," Beaumont coach Jim Tickemyer said. "We didn’t have a bunch of strikeouts. We just hit the ball right at them."

Beaumont had one solid opportunity to score but stranded a runner in the third. The loss ends Beaumont's win streak at nine games. The Cougars (14-4, 7-1) are still the team to beat in the league.

"We as coaches told the girls to keep the taste in their mouth for the night," Tickemyer said. "Tomorrow it will be gone. And on Friday we will look to put up some numbers and make a statement that we are not going anywhere."
