Beaumont Girls Tennis Off to Fast Start

Cougars win their seventh straight match with 15-3 victory over Woodcrest Christian.

Beaumont High Tennis Coach Carolyn Owens said during summer workouts that her team might be pretty good.

That was an understatement.

The Cougars are undefeated and on Tuesday won their seventh straight match with a 15-3 victory over visiting Woodcrest Christian.

The Cougars (7-0) host Jurupa Hills on Wednesday and host Twentynine Palms on Thursday.

“This is most definitely exceeding my expectations of what I expected to start off with,” Owens said. “We started with five tough matches. I thought we’d be tired.”

The Cougars opened the season with wins over Palm Springs (14-4), Yucaipa (10-8), Cathedral City (13-5), Rancho Verde (17-1), and San
Gorgonio (14-4). The Cougars won 15-3 over Heritage and again on Tuesday over Woodcrest Christian.

“It was hot and I was really impressed with they came out and gave it their all every single day,” Owens said. “We played some great matches. It’s a good start.”

The Cougars were hardly pressed during Tuesday’s victory.  Beaumont won seven of the nine matches in singles play and won eight of the nine matches in doubles play.

Mia Antonio and Jacklyn David swept their opponents. Antonio won with scores of 6-2, 6-3, and 6-3. David had three 6-1 wins.

“We played pretty good today,” David said. “Our footwork was a bit off but we pulled it together in the end. I think we played great”

The win streak is building steam.

“We definitely think about  it,” David said. “We want to keep our status undefeated.”

Returner Michelle Yang wasn’t expecting such early success.

“I wasn’t expecting it but after practice I saw that we were actually pretty good and I had a lot of confidence in the team,” Yang said. “We all play hard and we all really want it.”

Yang teamed with Kaitlyn Hopp for a sweep in doubles play
(6-3, 6-2, 6-1). It was the same for the team of Zuriah Smith and Brooke Carrillo (6-2, 6-4, 6-1. Yang and Hopp have yet to lose a set and improved to 21-0 on Tuesday.

The Cougars, however, have yet to win a ranking in the CIF-Southern Section Polls.  Still, the success has Owens feeling good about her team.

“This is the best start I’ve ever experienced,” Owens said. “I would explain that we get better and definitely put in a lot of work. We have put in a ton of effort in each of the matches.”
