Beaumont Cross Country Runners Advance to CIF Competition

The six high school cross country teams from the Mountain Pass League came together Thursday afternoon to compete for the league finals.

When all was said and done, the varsity boys from Beaumont and the varsity girls from San Jacinto came out on top.

The 2.95-mile course is situated on the east side of Diamond Valley Lake in Hemet.  The weather was near perfect and the course conditions prompted the athletes to push for excellent times and personal records.

Beaumont senior Doug Palmer won his varsity race with a time of 15:10.8.  His teammates senior Scott Oseguera and sophomore Andres Vizcarra finished second (14:54.9) and third (15:38.5).

Hemet’s top finisher was Jayden Emerson in fourth place (15:58.5) followed by San Jacinto’s Justin Vega in fifth (16:00.6).  The top runners for West Valley, Tahquitz and Citrus Hill were Bryan Sanchez in eleventh (16:38.8), Art Hernandez in eighteenth (17:13.8) and Giobani Martinez in twenty-eighth, respectively.

As a team the top five Beaumont runners scored a combined 25 points to beat out Hemet’s squad who finished with 39 points (low score wins).  West Valley finished third with 92 points, San Jacinto came in fourth (98), Tahquitz was fifth (124) and Citrus Hill tallied 172 points for their sixth-place finish.

Of significant note was Vega’s fifth-place.  Runners finishing in positions one through six who aren’t otherwise a member of a CIF playoff-bound team are rewarded with a place at the starting line at next week’s CIF-SS Prelims.  Vega will get that opportunity.

The top three varsity teams advance to next Saturday’s CIF-Southern Section Prelims at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
