Another Heartbreaker for Beaumont Baseball

Delongchamp pitches well in loss to Hemet.

Beaumont had victory within its grasp on Wednesday.

Then the Cougars lost their grip and gave a 9-4 win to visiting Hemet.

It could have been an uplifting victory for Beaumont, which has lost four of its last five games. The Cougars, however, still sit in the middle of the Mountain Pass League standings despite the defeat.

“We just gave it away,” Beaumont coach Rick Halsey said. “We have a lot of sophomores. Unfortunately with sophomores, you just have to weather the storm.”

The game was tied at 4 when Beaumont stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with a chance to win it. But one Beaumont batter went down swinging and another hit into a game-ending double play.

“We have to learn how to finish,” Halsey said. “It’s tough toward the end of the season.”

Worse yet, the Cougars stranded six runners in the previous three innings.

“We are capable,” Halsey said. “The team has character. We just have to go out and do it.”

The game was tied at 1 in the fourth inning. Beaumont took a 3-1 lead with their at-bat on a RBI single by Jake Johnson and a RBI single by Nick Bermeo.

Pitcher Kenny Delongchamp was sharp. The senior right hander scattered five hits over six innings of work.

“Kenny did a great job,” Halsey said. “For him to be effective he has to hit his spots. And he did that today. We should have been up 4-1 when he left the game.”

Defensively, however, Beaumont was plagued by errors. The Cougars finished with six, four of which led to runs. Beaumont has had 11 errors in its last three games.

“Errors are part of the game,” Halsey said. “We just seem to come up with them at the wrong time.”

Beaumont (4-5, 10-10) plays at Hemet on Friday.

“We are still in there,” Halsey said. “At worst we are still tied for third. We play Hemet again on Friday and then play Tahquitz. We need to win of those games.”
