Beaumont High Wrestler Malina Nelson Places 6th at Nationals in Oklahoma

Nelson advanced Saturday in a bracket that included 19 other wrestlers in her weight class from across the country, according to USA Wrestling.

Beaumont High wrestler Malina Nelson placed sixth Saturday at the USA Wrestling Girls Folkstyle Junior Nationals in Oklahoma City, becoming the second girl from her school to place in a national meet.

Nelson, 17, wrestled in the 112-pound class at the tournament, according to TheMat.com.

Nelson and Savanna Barr from Charter Oak High School in Covina, who placed sixth in the 117-pound class, were two of 13 California girls who went to nationals this year, Beaumont wrestling booster Yvonne Mader said.

By placing at the Junior Nationals, Nelson joins Beaumont graduate Amanda Hendey as the only girls from their school to place at the national level, Mader said.

Malina is a senior at Beaumont High. She is completing testing and plans to sign with a college in the next few weeks, Mader said.
