Beaumont Gets Nod, Banning Falls Short on National High School Rankings List

Do you agree with the rankings? What do you think can be done to improve the local schools' performance?

A report recently released ranking the nation's public high schools revealed some dismal scores for one local high school, while another one did manage to make it into one of the top classes.

According to U.S. News and World Report's annual list of the best schools, neither Banning or Beaumont high schools had an Academic Performance Index (API) score that met the California goal.

However, Beaumont High School still made it into the "silver" category of the state's schools, placing number 412 in the state.  It was listed at 1,988 in the nation.

The magazine collected data on more than 19,400 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. A total of 574 California schools (and 4,707 nationally) were ranked for the magazine's prestigious list.

Banning High School did not make the ranks.

The rankings were calculated by looking at student performance on state-mandated standardized tests, evaluating how effectively schools educated black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students, and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams to determine the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.

According to the report, neither schools ranked high when it came to preparing students for college.  Beaumont HS got a score of 18.6 out of 100 in the "college readiness index," while Banning HS got a score of 19.3.

The number one public high school in California is Oxford Academy in Cypress, which had 100 score for the college readiness index, an API of 995 and a student-teacher ratio of 29 to 1.
