Beaumont Boys Basketball Win in OT for Share of Mountain Pass League Title

The Cougars defeated West Valley 63-55 in overtime, to earn at least a share of the MPL title, the program's first since 1999.

Beaumont High boys basketball earned a share of their first Mountain Pass League in more than a decade Thursday night, defeating West Valley of Hemet 63-55 in overtime.

The host Cougars had West Valley on the ropes for much of the game, leading by 17 in the third quarter.

But West Valley did not go quietly, and several players from Hemet hit key three-pointers to take the lead, 53-50, with less than a minute remaining in regulation.

Beaumont then tied the score to force overtime, which they dominated.

At the final whistle they met at center-court, hollered and jumped, then pointed at the chamionship banner on their gymnasium wall.

Team staff took it down, added "2012" to make it official, and the Cougars celebration continued.

The victory Thursday night improved Beaumont's overall season record to 20-2, according to Cougars Athletic Director Martin DuSold.

The boys basketball team earned at least a share of their program's first league title since 1999.

Beaumont now has five boys basketball league titles since 1963.
