My Perspective on the Beaumont City Council Election

City Council Election 2012

This election we have two seats open on the Beaumont City Council. Current City Council Member and former Mayor Jeff Fox is running for re-election. Jeff has been an active member of the city council and has also served as the city representative on the Riverside Transit Agency. Council Fox has accomplished many goals and implemented programs that have benefited the city. He is well known appreciation for our Military Veterans, Fireman and Law Enforcement. The two memorials in front of City Hall were Jeff’s idea and he worked tirelessly to get them built. Jeff has also worked hard to get new parks and playing field for the youth of our community. He worked with me prior to being on the City Council to develop the 23 acre Sports Park. This park was built over a time span of 10 years plus using volunteer labor for a lot of the work. Jeff did a lot work in rounding up that help. His plan for an economic stimulus plan for the city of Beaumont helped us to continue to build new homes and help new business start with a reduction in permit fees. I can’t begin to count the time Jeff has spent going to Sacramento and or Washington DC to lobby congress for funds to build bridges, roads and even a dog park in our community.  Although Councilman Fox and I don’t always agree, he has been an asset to our city and I believe he deserves to be re-elected to the City Council.

In regards to the other Council seat that is currently held by Nancy Gall, I cannot support her re-election. Although she has been an active participant as a city council member, she apparently doesn’t grasp the requirements of the position.  I believe a Council Member should be concerned with the well being of the whole city and not just your pet special interest. matters.  She shows up for the meetings most of the time unprepared and doesn’t ask questions beforehand if she doesn’t understand an item on the agenda.  It appears that she doesn’t have the time for the position, since she refused appointments to daytime committees. This is why I think we have a better choice with Brenda Knight. Brenda ran for election in 2010 and came 5th with less than a 100 votes between her and Dave Castaldo. She has served on the Planning Commission, Veterans Expo Committee, Pass Transit , and other civic duties. I am impressed with Brenda’s willingness to listen and come up new ideas. She almost always attends the city council meetings and provides valuable input to agenda items. I am also impressed that she continued to serve the city as a volunteer even after the council didn’t renew her appointment to the planning commission. I believe she would provide an excellent women’s viewpoint on matters that come before the city council. In addition she would be a wonderful ambassador for the City as a Council Member. She has the time and the desire to serve the whole community. She doesn’t have any special interests other than continuing to make Beaumont a great place to live. I believe she deserves to be elected to the City Council.

I think you are a very nice man, Jeremiah, and you are most certainly not stupid. People whoRead More misspell words like "you're" while calling others stupid- now that might qualify.
ATC May 20, 2013 at 10:33 am
BTW, Victor, (ironically) your final insult to Jeremiah should read "I think you'reRead More STUPID", not "I think your STUPID". :)

Wow, Victor, what an assinine response to a valid comment by Jeremiah. Just because you love theRead More new layout, doesn't mean that others do, nor that we are stupid or somehow need training to use it. The larger number/real estate of the ads is not the issue, the issue is the "flow" of the relevant info/articles. As has been said by a number of others; the new layout mixes blogs and news together, meaning that both drop off the page sooner, regardless of how many are commenting on it. Your answer to post an "announcement" with a link to direct people back to that blog? Why add steps/links when it shouldn't be necessary? That's like a highway sign telling you to look for the next sign for the info that should be on the first sign. And the "linear only" comment threading is also contradictory to "flow". Yes, advertisers pay for these sites, but driving locals away do the sites (and advertisers) a disservice. The entire point of the Patch sites is mainly for locals to converse about local issues in a way that facilitates ease of communication. The new layout does the opposite. You refer to the "old site's "at a glance" one could see the topics and conversation participants with a quick glance of the homepage." And that's exactly the point. At a glance. I'm not sure why that concept has a negative connotation to you, but those of us who think otherwise are not "stupid", although you prove yourself to be just that by making that accusation. So you like the new layout. Good for you. We don't. In your mind that makes you brilliant and us stupid? You've certainly illuminated your own intelligence with that comment. Now go ahead and fire away at me too, proving your point (or ours?) even further.

Renee - I agree 100% with Lloyd on this and you will find all the posters who used to make the PatchRead More an interesting read are going elsewhere. I know you are stuck with what they give you, but you need to stop defending this change and address it's failure. Holding our comments does no good - giving them to the people you deal with AFTER the site becomes set in stone will not work. Even the news stories don't rotate fast enough - the same things are on the page that were there after the changeover. I won't be using the new features - they are not nearly as user-friendly as you try to portray and new responses to blogs and new comments are hidden. If they even show up - many of my comments on this new format have posted and then disappeared. Not a good move and it has hurt your paper. Jeremiah

Hi James, Actually all the Patch sites are switching over to this format, as the west coast wasRead More just the latest roll-out. They tested this model on the east coast, and most of the sites do have our "2.0" format now. However, they do encourage us to forward on user feedback about features you guys like— and don't like. I am saving all these comments to pass on to our teams. I appreciate your thoughts and I hope you will come to take advantage of some of the new features (as you already have with this board posting.) Patch is all about getting the community involved, and that's why there are now more ways for people to post, and why the blogs are now in the main column.
Lloyd White May 19, 2013 at 05:31 pm
James, I couldn't agree more. My posts on the old format generated many more comments than with theRead More new format. Sometimes my posts wouldn't make it to the front page and no one saw them until I asked the editor to move them to the blog column. Now they get lost in the news column and they drop off faster. Newcomers to the patch won't know whose blogs to go and check out. I hope the patch will find away to return the focus to the blogs, you are right there is no difference from the newspaper sites now.

Join us for the March! We will have picket signs that clearly state our different perspectives. WeRead More will have brochures that explain the cause. Distributing fliers before the march is a HUGE part of this. Please tell your neighbors about this... www.march-against-monsanto.com

TOTALLY AGREE 100% too !! Especially with Mr. Price regarding replying to individual comments, vs.Read More these big 'ol run-on threads -- & the ginormous ad panel sucks too...Patch doesn't feel as intimate as before. It was cute, handy, & informative ...Now it thinks its Facebook, ....Errrr..... :(
Renee Schiavone (Editor) May 15, 2013 at 03:28 pm
I personally don't have too much control over the way the site looks and functions, since it's partRead More of Patch overall. However, I am forwarding all your suggestions on to our design team and appreciate all the feedback-- positive and negative! And Jeremiah, I've asked around about the FB commenting thing some more, and there really are no plans to do away with our Patch logins. The FB comments are just meant to be a "plus" for those who want them... and others don't have to touch :)
Jeremiah Price May 15, 2013 at 03:01 pm
100% agree with that! Plus I liked the way that in the old one you could reply to an individualRead More comment. This one only lets you post at the end of the thread. Pretty sure she has started using the Facebook comments program, which by itself will keep me from posting. If the old one doesn't come back I will most likely be saying sayonara. I pretty much like everything else, but this was the real draw of the Patch and it's strong point - especially during the fire. Advertisement pane is about 10% too large as well and should be on the other side of the page to look right. Renee is trying though, which is appreciated. I just hope she listens about the comments section. Jeremiah
