Stoppe Owners Project Opening at Haven in Downtown Banning on Nov. 26

Lamese Ugapo says he will retain the Haven name at the corner of San Gorgonio and Ramsey.

The new owners of The Haven in downtown Banning intend to open Nov. 26, two weeks later than previously announced, Lamese Ugapo said this week.

The Ugapos, owners of The Stoppe in Beaumont, touted the opening of their new location in October.

According to Ugapo's recent Facebook posts, he and his staff will offer signature sandwiches created especially for The Haven, including "Smoked Salmon, Roma tomatoes, fresh arugula tossed in olive oil, lemon juice, pink Himalayan sea salt, black pepper and crushed red pepper. Served on grilled ciabatta bread with black pepper mayo. Quite honestly one of the most delicious sandwiches I've ever had."

The Stoppe is currently located at 225 E. 6th St. in Beaumont.

The Haven is at 42 W. Ramsey St., across the street from Paddy O'Reilly's, just east of the Fox Theater, west of City Hall and the Banning Police Department.

So they put the kitchen and hood system in already and had all the inspections done!?? That is impressive work! I haven't seen anyone there working? Or is there to be no grill or oven? If there isn't going to be a grill, this article is a bit mis/un-informative to say the least.

yes hatter..why i mean why out of all things hate someone who is trying to bring business to downtown. can you count the business on 10 fingers Diego? I bet it took 40 fingers to count them 30 years ago.

A "closed" sign going away in Downtown Banning. A sandwich shop owner known for producing excellent and popular food in Beaumont -- in other words with a track record of success and quality product -- opening up a second location in a neighboring community. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Really? No question here. Welcome to location No. 2 in the San Gorgonio Pass Area. No reason to expect this location will be any less successful or quality than its first location. Good news all around. A business doing so well in one location that it is expanding into a second location, still close enough so the same owner/manager can keep an eye and his hands-on control in order to maintain and even improve the quality. Good news all the way around.

I've never eaten at The Shoppe in Beaumont, so I'm really excited about the new location in Banning!

On the "hatter" comment above. I believe this is a sandwich shop, not a clothing shop. I think there are a couple of other shops in the downtown Banning area that may sell hats and other clothing.

LOL! -how funny... (bout the "hatter" above)... Well whatever they're gonna sell, its a hell of a lot better than a vacant storefront! I STILL wish downtown Banning would put in an internet cafe!!! So this place & the 'stoppe' in Beaumont: they're not whack-a-do religious jesus-freaks like the people before them, right!? Thats the LAST thing Banning needs are more of those nuts! (so sick of that sad van full of "set free" nuts, trolling around town looking for people to "save") ...LOL

The Shoppe has really good sandwiches. And my husband especially love the Red Velvet Cake Shake. I haven't had a thing yet, that I didn't like. I'm glad they are expanding. Good for them.

I'm really looking forward to this shop opening, it will be nice to have another place to eat in town that isn't fast food. Typically, the "mom-n-pop" type eateries have the best food. However, as Diego pointed out above, I too, wonder about the grille and hood/ventilation systems that are required for this type of business but were not present previously. Have they been installed? Or is this location going to be cold sandwiches without the burgers that the Shoppe is known for? I sure hope this isn't another boondoggle operating without the required equipment and health/safety/business permits the way the Haven Coffe House was allowed to operate. That whole operation produced nothing for the city.

Why are several of you SO FOCUSED on the hood/ventilation system? Geez, don't worry about it. I'm sure that those issues are being dealt with. How about focusing on the positive aspects instead? A wonderful man and his family are going to be doing a great thing in our community. Lets go out and support these people. Best of luck Lamese.

Don't worry about it? Really? That's the attitude that has allowed a ridiculous amount of arrogance and corruption in many cities, Banning included. The Haven Coffehouse was a boondoggle that cost taxpayers a huge amount of money, created no jobs, little if any tax income, and was allowed to operate illegally without any of the permits and/or licenses that any other business was required to have. Hoods & ventilation systems are REQUIRED FOR A REASON, that is for the safety of the public. And your suggestion is to "not worry about it"? Why, because our city council has such an upstanding reputation when it comes to attracting businesses in an ethical and moral way?!?! (cough, cough!) I am excited to have another business in town, particularly one that is so highly recommended and especially if it is going to inculde the burgers that seem to be the Shoppe's mainstay. But not at the cost of public safety and the required equipment, licenses, and permits.

You are incorrect with your assumption!! I am not hating at all. In fact I am excited a new business is filling the hole left at the Haven. I am however truly wondering if you managed to get a kitchen in????!!!! YOU SHOULD RELAX a bit and realize not everyone is hating! Kitchen or no kitchen? Real simple question simply put. . . Got an answer ?
Diego Rose November 20, 2012 at 05:47 PM
Shawn, you should learn to read and write a bit better before you "point fingers" at anyone. I wasn't hating at all! If asking whether or not someone put a kitchen in is hating, you need to get some thicker skin!!!

To all of you over sensitive Shoppe fans. . . . . .Relax!!!!! The Shoppe has a full grill in Beaumont. Yes or NO? Wanting to know what this kitchen is going to produce is why I have asked about the hood system. I am also in the restaurant and bar business so I know that it can be an overwhelming task to get the systems installed. I am a huge advocate for supporting local business and planned on giving the new Shoppe location a second chance after my first not so good experience at the Beaumont location. I am just wanting to know what I can expect to choose from. What are your problems with that??
Dex November 21, 2012 at 04:06 PM
Gary....you seem to have soooo much time on your hands. Why don't you go down there and offer up your services as a watchdog for the interests of the public. You can make sure that the Ugapos are not grilling up sandwiches on a hibachi in the back alley, and that we will all be safe tonight because no one cooked up any non-permitted food items. Please....do us all a favor and go down there and poke your head in the window. Then report back here as to what you saw. Then maybe a few of you will be able to get some sleep tonight.
ATC November 27, 2012 at 05:13 AM
Dex, It appears that I have just slightly less time on my hands than you have on yours, since you have decided to take me on and challenge my every comment. if you don't like my comments, then don't read them; they're known as "my opinion", and no one is forcing them down your throat. I would love to order the Stoppe's famous burgers here at the new location, but I'm not so sure that they are going to offer them here, as that would require a hood/ventilation system. And as of yet, no one has definitively answered the question. So rather than insult me for asking, why don't you make yourself useful and try to ANSWER? Or is it easier to just throw mud?
