Ruiz: "Mary Bono Mack Doesn't Represent Us"

Press conference today bring members of various communities forward with similar message

Dr. Raul Ruiz (D-Coachella) brought members of the community to speak at a press conference in Palm Desert this afternoon, which tried to send a unified message -  that Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (R-Palm Springs) isn't voting in their interests.

"Mary Bono Mack votes affect everything in my life and my lifestyle and she's nowhere to be found,"  said a woman who introduced herself as 'Melinda',  a small business owner, lesbian, military veteran, medicare recipient and voter in the 36th Congressional District.

Others spoke from the viewpoint of medicare recipients, small business owners, seniors and Latinos - all commenting on how the Congresswoman's votes have affected them, with every speaker using the phrase "she's out of touch" at some point in their remarks.

Ruiz tried to emphasize his point with an quote from that Congresswoman made on monday.

" 'I pledge that after November, I will try my hardest to speak to Latino voters', she said.  'This election, I'm a little bit hamstrung.  But I will do my best, because I think that they deserve the attention we need to give them.' ", Ruiz read from his notes.

"My response to Congresswoman Bono Mack is that she's had 14 years to give them the attention that they deserve.  The Congresswoman's statements are an example of how far out of touch she has become with this community."

"Her comments from Monday that she doesn't need to speak with Latino voters until after the election are just another example of how far out of touch she'd become.   This is unacceptable.  A Representative should represent all of their district, and far too many have been left behind by Congresswoman Bono Mack.

"She will not hold public events to listen; and most people can't afford the price of admission to speak to their Congresswoman at her events."

The Congresswoman's campaign has been contacted for comment.

Agree with Linda's post. All of us in the district are "us." We all benefit or suffer together. I, along with a growing number of Americans, are tired of the politics of economic class vs. economic class, gender vs. gender and skin color vs. skin color. Let's all aspire to become the most successful we can be and not waste time trying to shoot down those who are more successful than we are. Let's spend more time raising up ourselves and less time trying to bring others down.

Dr. Ruiz has been holding public events and house parties all over this valley since last December...I know because I have been there. And, where has Mary been? She has drifted this way a few times to hold invitation only events for the privileged few. She will not face those she claims to repersent for open dialogue and questions. And, she has come off recently as a very angry woman when pushed to do the right thing.

A Quote from today's Alternet, by R.J. Eskow: "Whatever the reasons, MBM is hopelessly out of touch with most people's hopes and concerns. She's been unhelpful--in fact downright destructive--to the economic needs of the middle class. The voters of her district would be wise to select someone who can truly represent them as their representative in Congress"

The mudslinging is coming from both candidates.

Raul Ruiz and the Palm Springs dems are exremely divisive , elitist , arrogant bunch. They say they are Democrats yet they despise anything thats democratic. Instead favoring machine style boss politics, consolidation of power, and forced elections. They say they are for civil rights and equality yet its clear they seek only more rights for themselves while attacking the rights of others. Ruiz is just their latest hack they are using , a radical who participated in extreme hate groups for many years. As a lifelong democrat Im disturbed how radical, hateful extremists with fringe agendas have hijacked the democraric party which used to stand for something once with the Kennedys and other great American leaders who truly fought for all of us.
