Combat Soldiers Grateful for Support at 'Welcome Home Lunch' in Beaumont

Marine Lance Cpl. David 'Scooter' Ortega, Marine Lance Cpl. Andrew Smith, and Army Pfc. Alfredo Mendoza Jr. attended the event Sunday afternoon at Pizza N Pasta Lovers, 1667 E. Sixth St.

Three young men from the San Gorgonio Pass, now with the Marine Corps and Army, returned this month from combat tours in Afghanistan and enjoyed a 'Welcome Home Luncheon' Sunday in Beaumont.

Proud mother Sylvia Silva of Beaumont said she is trying to make the most of her time with her son, Army Pfc. Alfredo Mendoza Jr., 21.

Mendoza, a graduate of Beaumont High, is home on leave from Afghanistan but he has to return next week, Silva said.

"The last time we saw him was in June," Silva said. "We're very, very happy he's home. We just keep trying to make wonderful memories, enjoy the time, and wish it didn't go so fast.

"And we're praying for his safe return," Silva said. "He has to go back Nov. 2."

Mendoza said he and his family still have time for a trip to the beach and an amusement park.

"I'd just like to thank my friends and family," Mendoza said. "For supporting me in what I have to do."

Marines Lance Cpl. David 'Scooter' Ortega, 21, and Lance Cpl. Andrew Smith, 20, came with their friend, USMC Lance Cpl. Josh Cawthorn, 20, of Ashville, N.C., who was wounded in combat in June.

Ortega, a graduate of Banning High, was celebrating his birthday Sunday. Ortega and Smith, a graduate of Beaumont High, said they have to depart on another tour in 14 months.

The lunch was sponsored by Beaumont Unified School District boardmember Mark Orozco.

Other local elected officials who attended included Banning City councilmember Debbie Franklin, Beaumont City councilmember Nancy Gall, and Banning Unified School District boardmember Deborah Dukes.
