Residential No-Burn Area Includes Pass Residents Below 3,000 Feet

Residents living below 3,000 feet in the San Gorgonio Pass are not permitted to burn wood in their fireplaces today, New Year's Eve, according to the South Coast Air Quality Management District.

The residential no-burn alert was issued because of elevated fine particulate levels predicted by district forecasters.

Residents in no-burn areas are prohibited Dec. 31 "from burning wood or manufactured fire logs in their fireplaces from midnight tonight to midnight on Tuesday," district officials said.

The district's no-burn alerts do not apply to mountain communities above 3,000 feet in elevation. Homes that rely on wood as a sole source of heat, low-income households and those without natural gas service also are exempt from the requirement, district officials said.

Some Pass area residents questioned the need for the district's last no-burn alerts earlier this month.

Violators could be required to pay a first-time fine of $50 or complete a "smoke awareness class" online, SCAQMD spokesman Sam Atwood said Tuesday in a phone interview.

"We hope people comply voluntarily but if we get complaints we will follow up and investigate," Atwood said. "When we do investigate we're not going to contact any residents or knock on any doors."

A district inspector would have to witness smoke from a chimney firsthand to issue a violation, Atwood said.

Here's more from the district for those who live near or in no-burn areas:

On a no-burn day, residents can enter their ZIP code at www.aqmd.gov to see if they live in an affected area.  They can also sign up for daily reports on air quality and Check Before You Burn alerts at www.airalerts.org or call SCAQMD's 24-hour Check Before You Burn toll-free line at (866) 966-3293.

SCAQMD's Check Before You Burn program, in effect each winter from Nov. 1 to the end of February, is designed to protect public health by minimizing harmful wood smoke from residential wood burning. No-burn alerts are called when air quality is forecast to be elevated due to fine particulate levels (PM2.5). Wood smoke contains hundreds of contaminants including PM2.5, a pollutant linked to increased emergency room visits and hospitalizations, as well as increased risk of heart attacks and early deaths.

For further information on Check Before You Burn and alternatives to wood burning, see
www.healthyhearths.org.

SCAQMD is the air pollution control agency for major portions of Riverside, San Bernardino and L.A. counties, and  Orange County.

So exactly how did the SCAQMD contact me, a homeowner, with this news? Does a facebook post qualify as legal notification?
Eric December 31, 2013 at 08:07 PM
SCAQMD can kiss my ass.

it's a state-wide problem - it's all over the news ....the lakes up north are only at 20% capacity...the city of folsom is rationing water - http://www.sacbee.com/2013/12/31/6037924/california-marks-2013-as-historically.html
ATC January 01, 2014 at 10:44 AM
Shut up, Libi; this has nothing to do with water. ***** I wish I had known about this no-burn order; I would have lit up the fireplace last night. In fact, I'm going to make it a point to have a fire EVERY time that SCAQMD says I can't. That's my New Year's resolution.
Libi Uremovic January 01, 2014 at 11:48 AM
you're a big man atc ...i bet you also litter just to 'rebel against the system'.... rain cleans the air .....you're having air quality problems because of lack of rain..... the many purposes of rain is taught in 4th grade science because the concept is simple enough for a 10 year old to grasp.... go ahead and light your fire, throw litter out the window, and shoot your weapons in the air to pretend you have power ... your little rebel yell might give you some self satisfaction, but will never compare to the power of knowledge....too bad for you.... educate yourself and you won't feel so weak and insecure ...
Jeremiah January 01, 2014 at 12:20 PM
This is one time I agree with ATC - shut up, Libi. Hasn't Sacramento got a Patch? Stay in Sacramento and clean up your own town (sarcasm). It's obvious you're trolling the Patch looking for something to make yourself the center of attention in. You're showing your ignorance of the situation and making yourself look stupid. What are you doing supporting a government program which is one of the most corrupt on record in their attempt to gain power over the citizenry? Shame on you! **** Jeremiah

Well today's map shows all green go figure that.....
Jeremiah January 01, 2014 at 04:05 PM
Here's one to think on and shake your head over - for years now the SCAQMD has been telling us how well their policies have worked and how much cleaner our air is than it used to be when I grew up in the 60's and 70's. Now all of a sudden it isn't and we can't use the fireplaces which were perfectly legal and not a problem until now. **** Jeremiah

Libi, I have seen no evidence that you have "proven" that anybody is "corrupt" or "on the take." Could you please come up with some new words for 2014, or prove your case?
a litttle justice January 01, 2014 at 07:23 PM
...and when I say prove your case, I mean prosecution in a court of law, not in the court of public (your) opinion.
Amy Causey January 01, 2014 at 07:26 PM
Well let's have a mandatory you can't use the car day as well if you all give such a shit about the Pollution..... Seriously a fire place causing so much of a problem

Indictments, arrests, convictions...that kind of nonsense! When this happens I will publicly congratulate you, and I'm sure others will as well. Until then, you're no longer interesting or viable.

Libi Uremovic January 01, 2014 at 07:35 PM
yes the citizens of beaumont will sit and wait for the government to save them... people can award themselves titles like 'patriot' or 'conservative', but without action they're only words.... .... shallow words .... i printed the audits in the paper so the citizenry would be informed.....it's up to you to control your own government .... as the saying goes; you can lead an animal to the truth, but you can't make them think....
Libi Uremovic January 01, 2014 at 07:42 PM
'... When this happens I will publicly congratulate you,...' you won't be able to publicly congratulate me because you'll be in jail ..... ..............but we'll send in guy to get your statement.... and i want 27 congratulations...one from each of your split personalities....

fraud ....racketeering,.....embezzlement.... conspiracy ..... .....feel better....???? '... When this happens I will publicly congratulate you,...' you won't be able to publicly congratulate me because you'll be in jail ..... #1. I'll feel better when you prove one of them. #2. I wouldn't be encouraging you to prove something if I was even remotely involved. I'm just tired of your accusations...PROVE SOMETHING!!!
