UPDATE at 6 p.m.: Caltrans Cancels Night Closures on WB 10 in Banning

The slab replacement and grooving project is in the same area where unannounced road work and lane closures resulted in a 10-hour, 20-mile backup on Sunday Feb. 12.

Update 6:08 p.m. A Caltrans spokeswoman called Banning-Beaumont Patch just after 6 p.m. and said the pavement rehab work planned for Wednesday night through Thursday morning is cancelled.

"The work is cancelled," Caltrans District 8 spokeswoman Michelle Profant said. "I believe it's due to weather, but I'm not sure. So it's postponed again."

Profant said she was not sure when the work will be re-scheduled.

Update 3:08 p.m. Caltrans intends to go forward Wednesday night with a slab replacement and grooving project on westbound Interstate 10 in Banning, work that was postponed Tuesday due to weather, an official with the agency said Wednesday afternoon.

"It's a go," District 8 spokeswoman Michelle Profant said just before 3 p.m. "It will be in the same location, with the same closures and same times previously announced for the work that was postponed."

The night work is in the same area where and lane closures resulted in a 10-hour, 20-mile backup into on Sunday Feb. 12.

The pavement rehab project for 8 p.m. Feb. 29 to 5 a.m. March 1 will take place "weather permitting," according to Caltrans.

There will be alternating lane closures on the westbound 10 between Hargrave Street and Sunset Avenue, according to Caltrans.

There will also be alternating ramp closures on the westound 10 on-ramps and off-ramps between Hargrave and Sunset, according to Caltrans.

Posted 11:38 a.m. Night lane and ramp closures on westbound Interstate 10 in Banning that were planned Tuesday night through early Wednesday for more pavement rehab work were postponed due to weather, a Caltrans official said Wednesday.

The work may take place Wednesday night through Thursday morning, District 8 spokeswoman Michelle Profant said before noon Wednesday.

"They haven't made a decision yet," Profant said. "I'm waiting to hear from an engineer."

The slab replacement and grooving project is in the same area where and lane closures resulted in a 10-hour, 20-mile backup into on Sunday Feb. 12.

When the work takes place, there will be alternating lane closures on the westbound 10 between Hargrave Street and Sunset Avenue, according to Caltrans.

There will also be alternating ramp closures on the westound 10 on-ramps and off-ramps between Hargrave and Sunset, according to Caltrans.

Caltrans District 8 Director Raymond W. Wolfe released another apology last week for the on Feb. 12, this one directed to "the public at large." and Caltrans issued last week.

Wolfe's Feb. 23 letter begins

"To whom it may concern:

"Recent correspondence from my office to your elected officials wherein I expressed my apologies for the events of February 12 on Interstate 10 in Beaumont have been broadcast through the media.

"I would like to take this opportunity to extend my personal apologies to the public at large. I certainly hope that the inappropriate actions of a few of my staff, in this one instance, have not erased years of effort to create an open transparent organization.

"The delays many of you suffered were avoidable. You have my personal commitment, and that of the Department, that we will do everything possible to regain your confidence and continue to foster open communication and harmonious relations.

"As I have stated repeatedly, we have taken actions to ensure this will not be repeated."

Wolfe appeared before the Riverside County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday Feb. 28.

Wolfe will also be attending a public forum 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday March 8 at Rancho Mirage Public Library, 71100 Highway 111, Caltrans spokeswoman Shelli Lombardo said. Wolfe is appearing at the request of State Assemblymembers Brian Nestande, Paul Cook, and Kevin Jeffries. Lombardo said the public is encouraged to attend.
