New Speed Limits Expected to be Posted on Several Cherry Valley Roads

Following a public hearing in two weeks, the board is expected to formally approve the request, which will give CHP the authority to enforce radar speed-detection.

The Board of Supervisors Tuesday tentatively approved posting speed limits on multiple roads in western, central and eastern Riverside County.

In a 4-0 vote, with Supervisor John Tavaglione out sick, the board gave its initial nod to a county Department of Transportation request to establish speed zones on various roads in unincorporated communities, including Bermuda Dunes, Cherry Valley, Lake Mathews and Temescal Canyon.

Following a public hearing in two weeks, the board is expected to formally approve the request.

Transportation officials notified the board that traffic and engineering studies had been performed in accordance with state law, resulting in findings that posted speed limits were needed along numerous roadways for safety reasons -- and to facilitate radar speed-detection enforcement by California Highway Patrol officers, who provide traffic control throughout the unincorporated areas under a long-standing agreement with the county.

In all but a couple of cases, no speed signs are posted at any of the locations. In places where signs have been available, the new maximum allowable speeds will be 5 mph lower, transportation documents showed.
