County Names Interim Registrar of Voters

Current Registrar of Voters Kari Verjil announced her retirement in January. Now, the county has named an interim leader of the office.

The following is a news release from the County of Riverside: 

Assistant Registrar of Voters Rebecca A. Spencer, who has worked in the Riverside County registrar’s office for more than 14 years, has been named interim registrar of voters. The appointment by county Executive Officer Jay Orr follows Registrar Kari Verjil’s retirement and takes effect Friday.

 

Spencer joined the registrar’s office in 1999 as a student intern. She was chief deputy registrar  from 2005 to 2010, with duties focused on candidate services,voter services and absentee voting. She served as interim registrar from November 2010 through February 2011 while a permanent registrar was recruited. She has been assistant registrar since April 2011.

As assistant registrar, Spencer has been responsible for hiring staff and overseeing five divisions with 32 full-time employees and 300 temporary employees in the run-up to major elections. She will coordinate election activities in the registrar’s office as the statewide primary election in June approaches.

Spencer has worked to successfully implement online filing of election campaign statements and to revise the county’s campaign disclosure ordinance. Her duties have included implementing software to improve efficiency in the registrar’s geographic information systems functions, and she conducts election update seminars for city clerks, school districts and special districts.

 

Spencer earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of California, Riverside, in 2004. She received a master’s degree in business administration from UCR in 2008. She is a member of the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials and the Certified Election and Registration Association.

 

Spencer lives in Riverside and, in her spare time, enjoys spending summers on the Colorado River and off-roading in the desert.
