Condemned San Gorgonio Inn to be Leveled Monday Morning

Workers tore asbestos and other roofing materials off the condemned structure last week. The business first opend more than 125 years ago and is scheduled to be razed at 8 a.m. Monday.

The condemned San Gorgonio Inn on East Ramsey Street is scheduled to be leveled Monday morning.

The inn first opened in Banning more than 125 years ago, and guests included President Grover Cleveland in 1888, according to historians.

Workers started tearing the roof off the structure and removing asbestos from the condemned structure shortly after 7 a.m. last Wednesday.

The workers put on white plastic coveralls and wore masks to protect themselves from asbestos particles. Signs posted around the work site across Ramsey Street from City Hall warned of the dangers, including cancer and lung disease hazards.

A big rig driver left the inn Thursday afternoon with two trailer containers containing asbestos and other hazardous materials from the structure.

The truck driver said he was taking the loads to a La Paz County landfill north of Quartzsite, Az.

The City Council voted 5-0 in January to approve a contractor's bid to demolish the inn and the old West Coast Electric building across Alessandro Street for no more than $99,000.
