Agency: Water Project 'Imperative' to Keep Park Going

Riverside County supervisors this week week are expected to approve a $479,000 contract with a Riverside-based firm to complete a water project that was sidetracked when the original contractor ran into financial challenges.

The Rancho Jurupa Regional Sports Park on Crestmore Road was completed two years ago, but the facility has depended on outside sources for water since that time because an on-site water storage reservoir was left unfinished.

During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors is slated to sign off on an agreement with Principles Contracting Inc. to construct a reservoir, pumping plant and booster station at the location.

In 2010, the county awarded the $10 million Rancho Jurupa Regional Sports Park project to ASR Constructors Inc., which completed most of the work, establishing athletic fields, playgrounds and picnic areas at the 32-acre site, leaving only the water storage facility incomplete.

"ASR experienced financial difficulties and submitted a voluntary notice of default," according to an Economic Development Agency document posted to the board's policy agenda. "The Economic Development Agency ... began working to bring the project to completion."

The park is used by soccer clubs and residents throughout the area.

"To maintain the viability of this thriving park, it is imperative to have the permanent water supply and service (available)," EDA documents state.

If the board approves the contract, work would get underway within weeks.

Funds for the project would be drawn from a reserve account left over from the now-defunct Riverside County Redevelopment Agency.
