Yucaipa Man Killed in I-10 Crash in Beaumont Near Construction Zone

Edward Dodson III, 65, of Yucaipa, was in a pickup that crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer stopped in traffic on eastbound Interstate 10 east of Beaumont Avenue, about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, according to CHP and the coroner.

A Yucaipa man died Tuesday night on eastbound Interstate 10 in Beaumont when his pickup truck crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer stopped in traffic near a construction zone, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on the eastbound 10 east of Beaumont Avenue, CHP Officer Darren Meyer said.

Edward Dodson III, 65, of Yucaipa was driving a 1992 Toyota pickup east when a 1996 Freightliner pulling a semi-trailer "came to a stop behind traffic on the freeway due to pre-planned lane closures and freeway construction in the area," Meyer said.

Dodson apparently did not notice the stopped semi-trailer ahead of him, and his pickup struck the rear of the trailer, according to Meyer.

Dodson was killed instantly, Meyer said. The driver of the Freightliner, Leonidis Alvarez, 56, of Mexicali, Mexico, was not injured, Meyer said.

Two of the four lanes of eastbound I-10 were closed for the ensuing investigation for about for three hours, Meyer said.

The crash was being investigated by CHP Officer Jason Burke. Anyone with further information was urged to contact Burke by calling the CHP San Gorgonio headquarters at (951) 769-2000.
