Yucaipa Man Arrested in Alleged Home Invasion Robbery, Attempted Carjacking, Assault with Deadly Weapon

Men from Yucaipa and Adelanto were locked up Sunday on suspicion of home invasion robbery, attempted carjacking, and assault with a deadly weapon Saturday in west Riverside County.

Deputies in Jurupa Valley were dispatched to the reported home invasion shortly after 2 p.m. Oct. 12 to the 3800 block of Crestmore Road, sheriff's Sgt. William Davis said in a statement.

The home owners had returned to their residence to find two suspects in the process of burglarizing their home, Davis said.

The suspects tried to flee, allegedly assaulted the victims, and tried to steal their vehicle, Davis said.

"While en-route, deputies learned one suspect was still at the location and a second suspect had fled," Davis said. "Responding deputies arrived and ultimately took both suspects into custody."

The suspects were identified as:

  • Stephan Douglas Smith, 26, of Yucaipa
  • John Ernesto Gonzales, 48, of Adelanto

Both suspects were arrested and booked at Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside. They were held Sunday on $150,000 bail each, according to inmate records.
