Woman Drives on Sidewalk, Pedestrian Killed, Another Injured

A motorist drove on a sidewalk Thursday morning in San Bernardino, and one pedestrian was killed and another was injured, a police sergeant said.

The crash was reported at 8:59 a.m. Dec. 26 in the 1500 block of West Rialto Avenue, San Bernardino police Sgt. Vicki Cervantes said in a statement.

Rosa Deloera, 29, of Colton, was driving a 2006 Scion east on Rialto Avenue and she told investigators "she thought she either hit something in the roadway or her car had a mechanical problem . . . . " Cervantes said.

"She said this caused her vehicle to unexpectedly pull to the right, which is when she lost control of her steering and drove up onto the sidewalk south of the roadway where the front of her vehicle hit two pedestrians that were walking on the sidewalk at that location," Cervantes said.

A 32-year-old San Bernardino man on the sidewalk was struck and fatally injured, Cervantes said. He was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

Crystal Agustina Lara, 21, of San Bernardino, was also on the sidewalk, Cervantes said. She was struck and injured and taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where she was in stable condition.

Deloera was also injured and she was taken to San Bernardino Community Hospital, Cervantes said. She was treated and released.

"There is no indication that drugs or alcohol is a factor in this collision," Cervantes said.

The crash investigation was continuing. Anyone with more info was urged to call
San Bernardino police Traffic Officer M. Gonzalez at (909) 384-5791.
