Woman Dies after Crash on Gilman Springs Road

A wet road coupled with poor tire tread contributed to the driver losing control of her car.

A San Jacinto woman was killed early Friday morning when she lost control of her car and collided with a Kia driving in the opposite direction.

At about 4:43 a.m. the victim, 50, was driving a 2003 PT Cruiser westbound on Gilman Springs Road, west of Sublette Road, when she lost control while negotiating a curve, according to CHP Officer Darren Meyer. Her car then went directly into the path of the Kia the eastbound lane. The impact caused major damage to the side of the PT cruiser and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Kia, Madelene Mitcalf, 31, also of San Jacinto, was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

It was determined that no drugs or alcohol were involved, but that the roadway was wet and the tire tread on the PT Cruiser was very poor, said Meyer.
