Wife Accused of Murder in Death of San Jacinto Man

A woman was locked up Friday on suspicion of murder in the death of her husband, who "had likely been involved in a violent physical altercation" inside his residence before he died early Wednesday, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Kendra Deone Smith, 54, of San Jacinto, was arrested at 8 p.m. Thursday and booked early Dec. 6, according to inmate records. She was held Friday on $1 million at Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.

Her husband, Matthew Smith, 64, of San Jacinto, was found fatally injured in the road, in the 300 block of East 7th Street, when deputies responded at 3:23 a.m. Dec. 4 to a report of a man down, sheriff's Sgt. Jim Erickson said in a statement.

Matthew Smith was taken to Hemet Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at 4:10 a.m. Dec. 4, coroner's personnel said.

Several subjects were detained Wednesday at the scene on East 7th Street, Erickson said.

Investigators from the Central Homicide Unit and the San Jacinto Police Department continued investigating and "arrested the victim's wife" on Thursday, Erickson said in an update Friday.

Information about the cause of Matthew Smith's death had not been released as of Friday afternoon.

Anyone with more info was urged to call Investigator Espinoza at (760) 393-3500 or Sheriff's Dispatch at (951) 776-1099.
