Whitewater Man Accused of Leading Police on Chase + Crashing Stolen Car

The incident began shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday in the area of Paseo Dorotea and Calle San Antonio in Palm Springs. a police sergeant said.

A Whitewater man allegedly led police on a chase, crashed a car reported as stolen, and was arrested Saturday in Palm Springs.

It started shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday when officers spotted "a stolen 1998 Honda Accord driving in the area of Paseo Dorotea and Calle San Antonio," Palm Springs police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff said Sunday.

The vehicle had been reported stolen on Friday to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department in Whitewater, Kovaleff said.

Police tried to stop the 1998 Honda but the driverwould not stop, Kovaleff said.

"A brief pursuit began that lasted less than one minute," Kovaleff said. "The suspect lost control of the vehicle during a turn and collided into a hedge in the area of Paseo Dorotea and Mesquite Avenue."

The suspect ran and police found him at 7:44 a.m. hiding at an associate's home in the 3900 block of Calle San Antonio, Kovaleff said.

Michael Leroy Tagle, 33, was arrested and booked at Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle, recklessly evading a police vehicle, and violating post release conditions, according Kovaleff and inmate records.

Tagle was held Sunday evaning without bail. He has a court appearance scheduled at 8 a.m. Wednesday in Indio.
