Waste Oil Discovered in Banning Storm Drain, Flows South of Interstate 10

The waste oil traveled more than a mile into a flood control channel on the Morongo Indian Reservation, according to Cal Fire. As of 3:20 p.m., crews were still working to mitigate, isolate and remove the waste oil. The cause was being investigated.

Firefighters and a county fire hazardous materials team responded Monday to a report of about 100 gallons of waste oil in a city of Banning storm drain, according to Cal Fire.

The waste oil in the storm drain was reported at 9:37 a.m. in the 550 block of East Ramsey Street, said Jody Hagemann of Cal Fire-Riverside County.

The waste oil traveled more than a mile into a flood control channel on the Morongo Indian Reservation, Hagemann said.

Aside from Cal Fire-Riverside County, responding agencies included the city of Banning, the Riverside County Flood Control District, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, Caltrans, and the Department of Fish and Game.

No evacuations were necessary and no injuries were reported.
