UPDATE: Banning Near Downing Victim "Breathing on Own"

The Sun Lakes Country Club resident did not have a pulse when he was pulled from the pool, police said.

A man who was pulled unconscious from a Banning swimming pool on Monday is now breathing on his own thanks to the life-saving efforts of emergency personnel, police said Tuesday.

The unidentified 44-year-old was pulled from the main club house pool at Sun Lakes Country Club at around 6 p.m. near Sun Lakes Boulevard and Country Club Drive, Melody Hendrickson of Cal Fire-Riverside County said in a statement.

According to the Banning Police Department, police officers pulled the man from the pool, within just minutes of getting the initial call for help.

“Upon arrival, officers pulled a 44 year old male resident of Sun Lakes from the swimming pool,”  a statement from Chief Leonard Purvis says.  “CPR was initiated immediately to the victim who was not breathing and did not have a pulse.”

Banning police officer Officer Everett Babcock, an eight-year department veteran, was on patrol on the west side of town when he got the call at 6:18 p.m., Officer Rick Youngblood, a Banning police watch commander, said. He reached the scene in about two-and-a-half minutes, and was the first to perform CPR, he said.

Cal Fire crews got to the scene a short time later, and continued the CPR efforts, according to Purvis.

“After approximately 20 minutes of on scene treatment, a pulse was detected and the victim was transported to San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital for further treatment,” he said.

At 11 p.m. Monday, police were advised that the man was in stable condition, breathing on his own, according to Purvis.
