The Hathaway Fire that broke out northeast of Banning two weeks ago was considered 95 percent contained as of 6 p.m. Sunday June 23, according to Forest Service incident commanders at Banning Municipal Airport.
The estimated size of the burned area remained at 3,825 acres. There were 153 personnel assigned to the fire as of Sunday evening. Full containment is hoped for by Tuesday June 25.
"There has been no increase in fire size since June 20," incident commanders said. "Small pockets of heat continue to burnout well within the fire perimeter with smoke visible from Interstate 10."
The cause of the fire, which broke out Sunday June 9 on the north edge of the Morongo Indian Reservation, remained under investigation.
Ten firefighters have sustained minor injuries on the Hathaway Fire since June 9. A Burn Area Emergency Response team has been assigned to the incident.
The cost for fighting the fire as of Friday June 21 was around $12 million, acting incident commander John Ellison said in an interview at the Banning airport.
