Two Deputies Crash Patrol Vehicles New Year's Day on SR 62

Two San Bernardino County deputies in patrol vehicles collided New Year's Day on State Route 62 between Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms, a California Highway Patrol sergeant said Thursday.

The collision occurred Wednesday on SR 62 east of Arizona Avenue, Sgt. W. L. Green of the Morongo Basin CHP said in a statement.

Dispatchers with CHP received a 9-1-1 call about the collision at 6:35 p.m. Jan. 1, Green said.

Both deputies had been assigned to patrol in the Twentynine Palms area, and they were driving separate vehicles west on SR 62, "in the #1 lane returning to the Morongo Basin Station near the end of their shift," Green said.

"East of Arizona Avenue, the trailing patrol vehicle inadvertently overtook the lead vehicle and a collision occurred sending both vehicles out of control," Green said.

"The lead patrol vehicle entered into a side skid, crossed the eastbound lanes, and overturned in the open desert on the south side of SR 62," Green said. "The trailing vehicle skidded to a stop on the north shoulder of SR 62."

Both deputies were taken to Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree, which is just west of Arizona Avenue, Green said. The deputies were treated for minor injuries and released.

"Traffic bypassed the scene utilizing adjacent dirt roads which allowed for investigation, recovery of the vehicles and clean-up of the highway," Green said.

Officer R. Swanson of the California Highway Patrol was assigned to investigate the collision and determine the cause, Green said. Anyone with more info was urged to call the Morongo Basin CHP at (760) 366-3707.

You seem to have intimate knowledge of street racing.

Wonder which deputy is gonna be on time out after that?

Your words say it all, Libi. I will pray for you. **** Jeremiah

Libi do you have reading comprehension issues? No place does it say New Year's Eve it days New Year' Day (obviously your brain is filled with something but it is not facts!)
haden ward January 03, 2014 at 09:29 AM
Soooooo, two deputies still crashed, right?
desertpatriot January 03, 2014 at 12:50 PM
"Your words say it all, Libi. I will pray for you. ** Jeremiah" libi will need more than a prayer jerry; she'll need a miracle!

Sounds like a simple case of a deputy not paying attention. Probably a very long shift, and cut over too quickly. Police officers are only human, why all these conspiracy theories of drag racing and sweeping it under the rug sounds like people just like thinking the worst.

Libi, Don't you have any other place to hang out? Guess you have your town ALL cleaned up ? Really, you need to find a boyfriend to take out your problems on.

Wow, you'd think the comments would be about two sheriff's deputies wrecking two of the taxpayers vehicles and what the probable cause could've been...
Jeremiah January 03, 2014 at 09:40 PM
I hope the two deputies are okay. That's what the comments should be about. The only thing we know is the vehicle from behind hit the front one and they both went out of control. Anything beyond that is pure speculation until more facts are released. So if you weren't there and didn't see it all these speculations about racing or going to sleep or whatever are just ignorant hot air. Steve, most people on here know that, and that is why they resent Libi coming on with her wild conspiracy theories and vitriol. We're tired of it. She needs to use her intelligence (which she has a lot of), learn some manners, and spend about 2 months making normal and thoughtful posts and she will earn her credibility back.**** Jeremiah

"and that is why they resent Libi coming on with her wild conspiracy theories and vitriol. We're tired of it"*********** here here!!!************************************** "She needs to use her intelligence (which she has a lot of)" that's a stretch

Cops seem to drive a little harder than the average joe, if one's accelerating when the leader hit the brakes, bang. It happens plenty every day folks commute, so absent any other factors, I call it an "accident" something that can happen to any of us, including Libi and her vast intellect.

Sooooo, this whole thing is a crash between two licensed on duty deputies driving cars right? Not like the MRAP crap in Banning?
PrescientLogic January 04, 2014 at 03:54 PM
Skidding sideways, crossing oncoming traffic at high speed and rolling into the desert on the opposite side while the overtaken car also leaves skid marks is careless driving 9 out of 10 times at the least eh? The other 1 time could be regarded as plain and simple criminal reckless driving!
