Toddler Ran Over in Hemet Driveway, Dies

The one and a half year old girl was struck by her uncle's SUV in his driveway, CHP officials said.

A one and a half year old girl was killed Wednesday when she was run over by a family member in their Hemet driveway, officials said.

CHP Officer Darren Meyer says the little girl, Esmeralda Rios, had been standing next to her mother-- who was holding another daughter in her arms-- in the driveway, but walked away towards where her uncle was parking a car.

That's when 28-year-old Jeramie Salazar struck the toddler, shortly after 11 a.m., according to Meyer.

"Neither Salazar nor his sister-in-law saw Esmeralda walk away from her mother’s side towards the GMC Yukon,"  Meyer said.  "As Salazar was parking the GMC Yukon near the front of the house the vehicle’s right rear tire rolled over the child."

Paramedics immediately responded to the scene, and took Esmeralda to Hemet Valley Medical Center in critical condition, according to CHP and fire reports.
