'Thousands of Nails' Spilled on 243 Just Up the Hill from South Banning

Spill was reported at 11:27 a.m. Monday and the vehicle that spilled the nails that did not stop, CHP Officer Darren Meyer said in a phone interview. A Caltrans crew cleared the road by 2:30 p.m., Meyer said.

A load of nails fell off a vehicle and covered both lanes of Highway 243 just up the hill from south Banning for about three hours Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The spill was reported at 11:27 a.m. near the first or second curve above the intersection with Old Banning-Idyllwild Road, said CHP Officer Darren Meyer of the San Gorgonio Pass station.

The spill was on both lanes for an estimated three-quarters of a mile, according to the CHP.

"It's just a little box of nails from Home Depot," Meyer said. "We're talking thousands of nails. That's why Caltrans sent a sweeper up there to make sure the road was clear."

Workers cleared one lane initially so that motorists could still get  up and down the mountain road, Meyer said. Both lanes were clear and reported open at 2:30 p.m., Meyer said.
