UPDATE: Suspect in Banning Shooting Surrenders to SWAT Team in Beaumont

The suspect surrendered about 10:30 a.m. Friday in the 1200 block of Massachusetts Avenue in Beaumont, Beaumont police Chief Frank Coe said.

Updated 4 p.m. Details of the shooting were released Friday afternoon by Gang investigators with Banning police.

The shooting was reported at 6:47 p.m. Thursday and police were dispatched to the 1700 block of West Williams Street, Banning police said.

They found a 23-year-old man who had been shot multiple times near Nicolet Street and Sims Street. He drove himself to the 1700 block of West Williams, police said.

The victim was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs where he was treated. He was expected to survive his injuries, police said.

The San Gorgonio Special Operations Gang Task Force identified the suspect as Ramon Islas Ruiz, a 22-year-old gang member from Beaumont.

Updated 2:15 p.m. A gunman shot another male multiple times Thursday night in Banning, fled to Beaumont, and eventually surrendered Friday morning in the 1200 block of Massachusetts Avenue, authorities said.

The shooting occurred between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. near Nicolet and Sims streets in Banning, Banning Chief of Police Leonard Purvis said in a phone interview.

The victim was shot multiple times and taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Purvis said.

The Banning police Gang Task Force searched for the gunman and eventually located him about 9 a.m. Friday in Beaumont, Purvis said.

The suspect initially refused to come out of a residence in the 1200 block of Massachusetts Avenue, but he surrendered when a sheriff's SWAT team arrived, Beaumont police Chief Frank Coe said in a phone interview.

The suspect in custody was an adult, and he was being questioned by gang investigators in Banning, Purvis said Friday afternoon.
