UPDATE: Summit Fire Burned Area 75 Pct Contained, Crews On Scene Thru Night

Some 400 firefighters were still battling a blaze that broke out at Mias Canyon Road and Bluff Road Friday but containment was at 65 percent, with the scorched acreage still mapped at 2,956 acres.

Update 6:32 p.m. The Summit Fire burned area in north Banning was declared 75 percent contained as of 6:20 p.m. Friday May 3, according to Cal Fire.

"Forward spread stopped," Jody Hagemann of Cal Fire-Riverside County said in an update Friday evening. "Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the night to patrol fire area for hot spots and improve containment lines."

The fire broke out Wednesday May 1 near Mias Canyon Road and Bluff Road at the north end of San Gorgonio Avenue, rapidly increased in size and tore over Banning Bench, destroying one home and another structure before sundown Wednesday.

The burned area remained estimated at 2,956 acres. No details of the investigation into what caused the fire had been announced as of Friday evening.

The fire was first reported about 12:40 p.m. Wednesday on Mias Canyon Road, near Bluff Road, according to fire officials.

It quickly spread, consuming close to 3,000 acres before its rate of spread was stopped.

The fire's perimeter was mapped at 2,956 sites.
