SIERRA FIRE: Tanker Planes, Helicopters Attack 200-Acre Blaze Near Base of Cajon Pass

Update 11:30 p.m. More than 390 personnel remained assigned to the Sierra Fire near the base of the Cajon Pass as of 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to incident command.

Resources assigned to the fire included 46 engines, five helicopters, six air tankers including the DC-10, 10 crews, five dozers, and four water tenders.


The fire broke out just before 4 p.m. Sept. 24 near Glen Helen Road and west of Interstate 15, prompting mandatory evacuations on Glen Helen at around 5:30 p.m., a Forest Service spokesman said earlier Tuesday.

"This afternoon the fire spread quickly to 200 acres," incident commanders said in an update at 10 p.m. Sept. 24. "Crews will continue to fight the fire overnight and we will have updated acreage and containment figures in the morning."

Evacuations remained in effect on Glen Helen Road west of Interstate 15 late Tuesday and they were to become voluntary at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

Containment of the fire is hoped for by 6 p.m. Friday Sept. 27.

Further west near Azusa in L.A. County, the 250-acre Madre Fire that started Monday Sept. 23 was estimated 70 percent contained, according to the Forest Service.

Posted 7:05 p.m. Aircraft attacking a 200-acre fire Tuesday evening near the base of the Cajon Pass included a DC-10, two Lockheed P2Vs, and a C-130, a manager at the USFS Tanker Base in San Bernardino said.

"We've got a helitanker and an air attack too," acting base manager Kelly Mathis said in a phone interview at 6:30 p.m.

The fire broke out just before 4 p.m. Sept. 24 near Glen Helen Road and west of Interstate 15, prompting mandatory evacuations on Glen Helen at around 5:30 p.m., Robert Taylor of the San Bernardino National Forest said in a phone interview at 6:40 p.m.

There were 450 personnel assigned to the fire as of 6:50 p.m., Taylor said.

No injuries or structure damage had been reported to the fire information center at San Bernardino National Forest headquarters, Taylor said.

Glen Helen Road was closed west of Glen Helen Parkway.
