Riverside County Woman Dies in Collision with Dump Truck

A woman was fatally injured Friday morning when she lost control of her Toyota Corolla in a curve on Cajalco Road and side-swiped a dump truck hauling a trailer, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. Jan. 3 on Cajalco east of Temescal Canyon Road, Riverside area CHP Officer Travis Monks said in a statement.

Martha Cruz, 27, of Perris, was driving a 2000 Corolla east on Cajalco, at about 50 miles per hour, and Omar A. Orozco, 38, of Riverside, was driving a 2000 Peterbilt three-axle dump truck with a two-axle trailer west, at about 35 mph, according to coroner's and CHP personnel.

"As the two vehicles approached each other, the driver of the Toyota Corolla failed to negotiate the curvature of the roadway, crossing over the double yellow lines," Monks said. "As a result, the Toyota Corolla side swiped the Peterbilt truck and the driver of the Toyota succumbed to her injuries on scene."

Cruz was not wearing a seat belt and she was not ejected, according to coroner's and CHP accounts.

"Orozco was wearing his occupant restraint at the time of the collision," Monks said.

The crash investigation was continuing. Anyone with more info was urged to call CHP Riverside at (951) 637-8000.
