Pursuit Starts in Banning, 2 Suspects Shot, Wounded by CHP in L.A. County

The chase began in Banning and it ended just off the 60 Freeway in unincorporated Industry, east of the San Gabriel River. The officer-involved shooting was reported at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, near the 60 and Workman Mill Road, authorities said.

A pursuit that started in Banning ended in Los Angeles County with two suspects shot and wounded, when one of them brandished a handgun and California Highway Patrol officers opened fire, authorities said Tuesday night.

The pursuit started Tuesday evening in Banning when Banning police tried to stop a vehicle, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher in Indio said.

The suspects fled at high speed and ended up westbound on the 60 Freeway in L.A. County, according to the CHP. The chase ended just north of the 60 Freeway in unincorporated Industry, east of the San Gabriel River.

The officer-involved shooting was reported at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, at Workman Mill Road and Crossroads Parkway North, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect vehicle was stopped and several CHP patrol vehicles were just behind when a suspect got out and brandished a handgun, Deputy Jeff Gordon of the L.A. County sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said.

As many as four CHP officers discharged their firearms, Gordon said.

Both wounded suspects were taken to area hospitals with wounds that were not considered life-threatening, Gordon said.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, Gordon said.

Initial reports from the L.A. County sheriff's department indicated there were three suspects, and all were taken into custody.

No officers were injured, Gordon said.

The Los Angeles County sheriff's Homicide Bureau was investigating.
