Prognosis 'Good' for 2-Year-Old Struck by Truck in Cherry Valley Blvd Driveway

The prognosis is "good" for a 2-year-old boy who was struck by a truck in a residential driveway in Cherry Valley on Tuesday, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said Wednesday.

The boy, a resident of Twentynine Palms, sustained abdominal abrasions and no apparent broken bones, CHP Officer Darren Meyer said in a phone interview.

"The information is as of last night," Meyer said. "The investigating officer was at the hospital, and he learned the boy was conscious and talking on his way to the hospital. His prognosis is good."

The incident was reported about 5:15 p.m. in the 39000 block of Cherry Valley Boulevard, and firefighter-paramedics from Cal Fire-Cherry Valley Station 22 responded, Cheri Patterson of Cal Fire said.

A 17-year-old Beaumont resident, Mariah Smith, was driving a 2004 Toyota SR5 north on a residential driveway when a group of children approached the truck and she stopped, Meyer said in a statement Tuesday night.

"Believing all the children were away from the vehicle, the driver began to pull into a parking area," Meyer said. "A two year old male approached the right front of the truck. The driver didn't see the child in front of the right front wheel. The Toyota's right front tire rolled over the child."

American Medical Response paramedics transported the child to Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, Meyer said.

The child is the nephew of the driver and he is a resident of the Twentynine Palms area, Meyer said.
